Hardwoods

Five key hardwoods, each with its distinctive and cherished characteristics, make up the bulk of Stickley’s furniture collections. In nearly every case, a range of finishes developed specifically for that wood species allows you to customize the finished look.

    Oak

Quartersawn American white oak produces boards of great strength, less likely to crack, check or warp than flat-sawn timber and ideal for crafting furniture that will last for generations. Quartersawing also reveals the ray flake, a highly prized tiger-stripe pattern running across the grain that makes each piece of furniture unique.

    Cherry

American Black Cherry has a naturally broad spectrum of color and grain. At Stickley, craftspeople blend its shades and grain to create a balance on each piece, but variations will be visible. Like fine wine, cherry's color mellows and deepens with age, developing a rich patina over time. This natural phenomenon makes each piece of cherry furniture a unique work of art.

    Walnut

Black Walnut is one of the hardest and most durable of the American hardwoods. Its grain is primarily straight, but occasional knots, curls, and burls give it character. The wood also achieves a silky smoothness with sanded and finished. Stickley’s Walnut Grove collection is a gorgeous example of the beauty and versatility of American Black Walnut.

    Mahogany

To protect the species, Stickley sources only plantation-grown Mahogany from Honduras, where the forests are managed and sustainable. This tropical hardwood is prized for a rich reddish-brown color that deepens over time. It lends itself to intricate carving, and crotch mahogany veneers create stunning feather-like grain patterns.

    Maple

Strong, durable Maple is a favorite for casegoods and upholstery frames. It has a light color and generally straight grain, but figured varieties like bird’s-eye, tiger, and curly maple make wonderful furniture. Because of its abundance in the northern U.S. and Canada, Maple allows Stickley to produce options for consumers on a budget, including Origins by Stickley.
